Matt Lauer has finally succeeded in making his way back into the news after two years of absence, but it’s not because he’s turning things around for himself.
The former Today show host was fired by NBC due to allegations of sexual misconduct and has mostly kept his head down ever since.
Now he’s back, and is involved in yet another scandal. Lauer wants his former place in the spotlight, but his recent actions have only proven that he’s not ready for it and former fans don’t want to see him back anytime soon.
Tik Tok videos
Lauer was featured in his daughter, Romy Lauer’s, Tik Tok video. Lauer was reportedly singing along with various songs, as well as dancing. One clip even shows him eating cereal as he’s singing along.
Perhaps no one told him to chew with his mouth closed.
Either way, fans were not impressed with his attempts to appear carefree and cool. There were a few supporters who are hopeful that Lauer will make his way back to television, but this appears to be a growing minority.
Ronan Farrow is taking a swipe not only at Matt Lauer, but the NBC network as a whole in his new book Catch and Kill.
According to the NY Times, Farrow accused NBC of silencing multiple women who wanted to speak out about Harvey Weinstein by purchasing the rights to the stories and then never publishing them.
Near the end of the book, Farrow drops a bombshell regarding Matt Lauer. He reportedly assaulted Brooke Nevils, a former employee of NBC, who kept quiet because she feared for her career.
Extra reports on more allegations that are making their way into the light. Matt Lauer reportedly had an affair with an unnamed NBC star who has since left the network.
According to Extra, “She is quoted saying, “I would walk into work with a knot in my stomach… I would come home and cry.”
The woman said she felt “like a hanging piece of meat.”
Extra then added, “After she declined Matt’s advances, the woman claims her career took a ‘sharp nosedive.’ She signed a nondisclosure agreement when she left the network.”
Lauer’s response and future in television
As expected, Lauer denies all claims of assault. In a statement to Extra, he said, “In a new book, it is alleged that an extramarital, but consensual, sexual encounter I have previously admitted having, was in fact an assault. It is categorically false, ignores the facts, and defies common sense.”
Given all the new allegations and Farrow’s new book, one has to wonder what Lauer was thinking when he posted the Tik Tok video with his daughter.
Perhaps he wants to prove that this isn’t as big a deal as the media is trying to make it out to be.
Many of Lauer’s statements certainly point to the fact that he feels no regret for the actions he has taken towards the women he worked with, but he did issue a public apology the day after he was fired.
ET Online reports that Savannah Guthrie read Lauer’s apology on the Today show.
Lauer wrote, “There are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused others by words and actions. To the people I have hurt, I am truly sorry,”
Is he truly sorry, or was he merely trying to salvage his reputation so that he could make a comeback? We can’t say for sure, but his actions imply that he is only sorry for the loss of his career and what it has done to his family.
In the meantime, there are no reports of any networks looking to give Lauer a second chance. Perhaps if his Tik Tok video gets enough positive reviews, he can make a career out of that.
