Cases in which income taxation is preferable to lump sum taxation with the same ex post net transfers. The main reason for progressive taxation is that the welfare cost of taking money from wealthy people is lower, because they have a lower marginal utility of consumption. Rescuing Disposable Time from Oblivion
Two hundred years ago this February, Charles Wentworth Dilke anonymously published a pamphlet titled The Source and Remedy of the National Difficulties, deduced from principles of political economy. Four decades later, Karl Marx would describe the pamphlet in his notes as an “important advance on Ricardo.” In his preface to volume two of Capital, Friedrich […] The post Rescuing Disposable Time from Oblivion appeared first on Angry Bear. November JOLTS report shows the renewed impact of the pandemic, partial lockdowns This morning’s JOLTS report for November (remember – a month in which there were total job gains) showed a jobs market recovery that at least paused due to the increasing effects of the out of control pandemic. How is the distribution of the covid 19 vaccines going in your neighborhood?
Having just had an operation at Mass General earlier this week, I was pleased to hear that the nurses I met had their first vaccination. But then I checked the Boston Globe and Med Page Today on our local progress in relation to my own turn. Worth a discussion and feedback on your own locality. You’ve Already Seen These Questions
You’ve Already Seen These Questions Why is it that no existing society, nor society that ever existed, has arrived at universal prosperity, considering that in all times, and in all societies, excepting only the very barbarous, a few years would naturally have led to it? How is it that notwithstanding the unbounded extent of capital, […] The post You’ve Already Seen These Questions appeared first on Angry Bear. [Read More...]
Exploiting the Stupids: The Intellectual Foundation of Movement Conservatism
Exploiting the Stupids: The Intellectual Foundation of Movement Conservatism From about the age of 8-12, I read a lot of sci-fi. Along the way, I stumbled across Robert Heinlein, in particular his novel The Day After Tomorrow, initially published as The Sixth Column. It was so crudely racist I avoided from then on anything with Heinlein’s name […] The post Exploiting the Stupids: The Intellectual Foundation of Movement Conservatism appeared first on Angry Bear. Populism
Populism has a nice ring; ‘will of the people’ and all that good stuff. So, why doesn’t it ever work? Not even in backward nations? Populism is disastrous in a nation as complex as the United States in times as complicated as these. There’s a reason that it never turns out well. Populism feeds off […] The post Populism appeared first on Angry Bear. [Read More...]
Impeachment, again
I want to revisit my earlier post on impeachment. ; I am more inclined to support impeachment today than I was 6 days ago, although it is still far from clear that impeachment makes sense. ; Trump has done great damage to this country by making clear that congressional Republicans will allow a lawless, authoritarian president who […] The post Impeachment, again appeared first on Angry Bear. Why the UK’s COVID crisis should be personal for so many Tory voters
There are around16 million over 60s living in the UK, nearly a quarter of the UK population. They are the most at risk from COVID: catching the virus could be a matter of life or death. To them the government’s handling, or rather mishandling, of the pandemic should be a matter of acute personal concern. It certainly is for me. Around60% of over 60s voted Conservative in the last election. The NHS is currently at breaking point. Tired and demoralised after almost a year of COVID, doctors and nurses find their hospitals are full and we haven’t yet seen the impact of Christmas and New Year. Whereas Johnson acted in March to save the NHS, this winter he decided to save Christmas instead, until he was… [Read More...]
